Hi Zirri,

I see that you are using a Malossi drive belt, and I think you are missing out on a simple mod with great benefits.

I had been thinking about this experiment for quite a while. A couple of times my mods have resulted in the belt rubbing on the inside of the transmission housing, and destroying the crankcase oil-seal below it. The normal test for this problem is the Edding test, marking the inside of the transmission housing below the variator with a pen or marker, then having a high-speed ride, and then checking whether the mark has been rubbed off.

But I reasoned that if the belt was the correct length, then at top speed it would just touch the shaft in the middle of the clutch pulley while it is riding at the top of the variator without rubbing. And conversely at idle, it should be at the top of the clutch pulley while just touching the variator shaft. It should not be possible for it to ride too high and rub at either end.

If you open your transmission and remove the outer variator pulley half, you will see that there is a lot of play in the belt, and while it is at its highest in the clutch (idling), it is riding a good distance away from the variator shaft. You are not getting as low a “bottom gear” as you should, and take-off acceleration is not what it should be. So I decided a shorter belt was required to get the maximum range of pulley ratios and I invested in a GT200 belt. The length of the GTS300 belt is 835 mm and the GT200 826 mm, and according to my reading the Malossi belt is the same length as the GTS300 one.

When the GT200 belt is installed, fatter/more Fuzzy washers are required to ensure that the belt can run at its lowest without being clamped tight between the pulley halves, One could actually use a shorter belt than the GT200 one, as even that has a bit of unnecessary play and isn’t brushing against the variator shaft at idle..

So by fitting a shorter belt, you effectively have an up-gear kit at the top end, a down-gear kit at the bottom end, and business as usual in the middle ranges. The result is more/higher wheelies and more top speed. A very noticeable improvement for the price of a belt.

With all your research using blocked varios you probably wouldn't have thought of this mod! :D

Hey Mike!

Wow great idea for stock engines as well I think. More efficient than Dr. Pulleys or expensive Variators.

What washer measurement is required to get the clearance you want for that Variator side of the belt?

I know this trick from my other scooters but up to now I didn't realise that there is any performance to find on my GTS300.

Anything else to be changed beside the washer and the belt itself? What about the plastic roll?

@Mike:
Thanks for your advice.
We did also tests with the shorter belt at the dyno and I aggree with you that the shorter belt increase the working ratio of the CVT.
But: The shorter belt increase the belt tension, which reduce the efficiency of the transmission system and lower the power output at the rearwheel (at the adjusted power peak point at CVT) for about 1hp at the GTS300 standard engine.
It´s nearly the same, if you mount a contra spring/GDF with to much force -> this also reduce the power output at rear wheel.
This is the reason, why I use still the standard lengh belt (in my case malossi belt) for the GTS300 engine type.

@GTS-Peter:
When installed the shorter belt, I didn´t use the plastic pulley between CVT and clutch.

I don't have a private road or race track available where I could test out the top end, so I can't really comment there. But I can feel a marked difference at low speeds, and good acceleration at all speeds.

At top speed, at the clutch pulley end one would see less torque, as one is in a higher "high gear", but power = torque x speed (or something like that - many decades since I learned all that!). Is it really the belt tension causing that power loss? Would one not see any loss with a up-gear kit which is doing much the same thing? The belt tension could be reduced by fitting a slightly weaker contra spring, and corresponding lighter roller weights, but going too far could result in belt slippage at take-off.

I don't really know enough of the geometry of the clutch pulley. Can the belt go much lower? Would depend on the length of the fully compressed contra spring and the presence of plastic rings, as mentioned. One could gauge it by seeing how high the belt climbs in the variator pulley at top speed with the shorter belt, I guess.

Anyway, as we have a universal speed limit of 110 kph in Australia ad one can easily lose one's licence speeding, this mod is a great success for me. I am not trying to reach any 160 kph target, but it's nice to get up there sooner. My scooter is still pulling strongly at 130 kph. Wish there was an autobahn nearby!

Sorry this is in English, my German is nicht gut.

I'm not sure that I would want to risk any potential rubbing on the center shafts. As originally designed, the contact 'point' of the belt is probably about half way through the thickness of the belt (with the outside slipping somewhat faster, and the inside slipping somewhat slower). Bottoming the belt out hard enough could force the inside of the belt not to slip at all, and the outside to slip twice as fast as normal. Slightly bottoming out would cause the belt to slip as normal, but with the center shaft adding additional friction to the inside of the belt. Either way the two points of contact would fight each other, and is probably contributing to heat/wear/HP loss. This is probably more of a high speed problem, since low speed would only be for a split second until the variator shifts to a higher ratio (or does the variator shift before the clutch hits?)

FWIW: A few months ago I measured the minimum ratio of the OEM variator setup (engine off, manually turning the crankshaft), and came up with 1:2.616667. Piaggio claims 1:2.3 as the minimum ratio, which tells me that even with no load there is still some belt slippage at slow speed ratios. Piaggio also claims the minimum ratio is 1:0.815, which means that the front & rear pulley sizes are not identical (the inverse ratio is 1:1.226994). I would expect belt grip to increase as pulley diameter increases, and since the rear pulley is larger, belt slip should be less at higher speed gearing (when not accounting for load). If the forums are to be believed, some people (with stock gearing & variator) have gotten a GPS speed of 82 mph/132 kmh, which calculates to 1:0.818, a 0.003 difference. So maybe there isn't much high speed belt slip...

Hi Anndee, I would love to know where you get your information. I can't find anything on Google. Anyway, I shall pull my transmission open this weekend and take some measurements. Then I shall start a new topic "GT200 belt on a GTS300". Don't want to pirate Zirri's topic any further.
Hope our German friends aren't too offended with an English topic on their forum. :)

Hey there,

Good idea to open a new topic for this. I have an original Piaggio 300 spare belt and can do some measurements as well.

Serien-Zylinderkopf (Ventile in diesem Fall unberührt):
